There are many causes of chronic insomnia: chronic stressors from life, chronic illness (e.g depression, anxiety), medication, pain1. Lack of sleep or poor quality of sleep is well known to have negative effects to our health, our daily functions and memory. Develop a good sleep hygiene is an important component of our daily lifestyle.
Find out the underlying cause and deal with it. If it is related to medical illness, consult your medical practitioner to treat the problem. Non drug therapy such as relaxation exercise may be helpful.
If insomnia is related to constant stress or nervousness, supplementation containing wild jujube seed extract, magnesium, chamomile extract can help to ease stress and promote relaxation. In additional to melatonin – a well known sleep hormone, 5-HTP also aids in sleep. 5-HTP is a naturally- occurring amino acid and precursor in the production of melatonin.
Insomnia can also be related to b12 deficiency or low b12 level as b12 is essential in the production of melatonin. Supplementation with b12 is a reasonable solution.
